CFO salary in Canada is one of the hardest executive numbers to pin down. Payscale reports an average base salary of C$151,529 (CAD, 2026, 395 profiles), while Salary.com reports a median base salary of C$367,998 (CAD, as of September 23, 2026) for the same title. This guide explains the gap, sets out the Toronto and Montreal readings, breaks down the full package and shows the free Canadian sources that settle the question. All dollar figures are in Canadian dollars unless marked USD.
What Is the Average CFO Salary in Canada in 2026?
The average CFO salary in Canada depends on which survey is read, and no single published number is the answer. Four national sources sit side by side below, each with the method behind it, because the method explains most of the difference.
- Salary.com: C$367,998 median base, with a usual range of C$294,691 to C$467,566, as of September 23, 2026. A base salary benchmark that excludes bonuses and benefits.
- Payscale: C$151,529 average base, with total pay from C$99,000 to C$269,000, updated April 30, 2026. Built from 395 self-reported profiles.
- Talent.com: $140,000 average per year, as shown on its Canadian site in 2026. An average of 1,964 salaries; the page does not state the underlying method.
- Job Bank: an hourly median of C$96.15 for senior managers in financial, communications and other business services, from the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey, updated November 19, 2025.

Why Do Published CFO Salary Figures Disagree by More Than $200,000?
Published CFO salary figures disagree because different kinds of data are compared as if they measured the same thing. Payscale averages self-reported profiles, Salary.com publishes a base salary benchmark, and Job Bank draws on a government labour force survey. Talent.com reports a count of salaries but, in the text we retrieved, no method.
Our working hypothesis, not a measured fact, is that self-reported data leans toward smaller companies and owner-operated businesses, which would explain why it reads low. No source cited here tests that. The practical rule is to match the benchmark to the company profile before using it, and never to compare a base-only figure with a total package.
What Each Data Source Actually Measures
- Self-reported profiles (Payscale): individual base salary reports, with bonus and profit sharing shown as separate ranges.
- Benchmark surveys (Salary.com): a base salary benchmark that excludes bonuses and benefits.
- Aggregated salary listings (Talent.com): an average over a stated number of salaries, with no breakdown between base and bonus.
- Government wage data (Job Bank): hourly wages from the Labour Force Survey, which cover wages only and not equity.
Which Benchmark Fits the Company
- Owner-operated business under $25M revenue: start with the self-reported data, then test it against the Job Bank wage range.
- Mid-market company, $100M to $500M revenue: start with the benchmark surveys, and read private-equity-backed roles against the bonus structure described below.
- Publicly listed issuer: use the management information circulars of listed peers, which publish the actual numbers.
How Much Do Toronto Employers Pay a CFO?
Toronto employers pay a CFO a package that no free public source isolates for the city. We did not find a verified Toronto-only CFO figure, so we do not quote one. The government data is the clearest Toronto reading: Job Bank shows an hourly median of C$96.15 for the Ontario region, identical to the Canada-wide median (updated November 19, 2025).
A Toronto premium is plausible. The city concentrates banks, investment firms, insurers and listed issuers, and they compete for the same small pool of listed-company finance leaders. That is our reading of the market, not a measured gap. For the hiring side, see our notes on finance recruitment in Toronto.
How Does Montreal CFO Pay Compare With Toronto?
Montreal CFO pay reads at or slightly above the national figure once the comparison stays inside one source. Salary.com puts the Montreal median base salary at C$383,454, with a usual range of C$307,068 to C$487,204, as of September 23, 2026. The Canadian median from the same provider and the same date is C$367,998, so Montreal sits about 4 percent higher (our arithmetic on those two figures).
The perception of a large Montreal discount is therefore not supported once the methodology is held constant. Both pages carry the same as-of date, but this is one provider's dataset, so read the gap as directional. Cost of living and head-office mix are plausible factors; no source here measures either, so no percentage is attached.
What Makes Up a Canadian CFO Compensation Package?
A Canadian CFO package has four components: base salary, an annual cash bonus, a long-term incentive or equity, and pension plus benefits. Quoting base alone understates the package, and the size of the gap varies with the employer. Salary.com's benchmark, for example, excludes bonuses and benefits, so it must never be set against a total package.
How Large Is a Typical CFO Bonus?
A typical CFO bonus is best expressed as a percentage of base. The only structured benchmark we found is US data: JM Search reports that standard CFO target bonuses in the middle market (revenue of US$100M to US$500M) are 50 to 59 percent of base salary, based on a Q4 2024 survey of 312 sitting CFOs in the United States, reported in USD. That is US middle-market data, and it should not be read as a Canadian norm. No Canadian dataset we located gives a comparable percentage.
When Does Equity Enter the Package?
Equity enters the package in private-equity-backed businesses, venture-backed growth companies and listed issuers, and rarely in owner-operated businesses. This is a qualitative reading of the market. No reliable Canadian dataset isolates equity for private-equity-backed CFOs.
What Drives a CFO Salary Up or Down?
Five drivers move a CFO salary, ranked here by weight: company revenue, ownership structure, industry reporting complexity, scope of the role, and transaction experience. A $40M owner-operated manufacturer and a $400M private-equity-backed platform both post a "CFO" role and pay for two different jobs.
Profession-wide accounting pay also sits far below the executive benchmarks. The 2025 CPA Canada Compensation Study for Ontario reports a median total compensation of $154,000 for Ontario CPAs who are not business owners (2024 income), against Salary.com's C$367,998 CFO median. Generic finance salary data therefore misleads at the executive level.
Company Revenue and Ownership Structure
- Under $25M revenue, owner-operated: the CFO often runs the whole finance function, pay is cash-weighted, and equity is rare.
- $100M to $500M revenue, mid-market: the scope widens to reporting, financing and often a transaction, and pay moves toward the benchmark survey readings.
- Publicly listed or private-equity-backed platform: the role carries governance duties, and pay includes share-based or equity components on top of a higher base.
Scope of the Role and Title Inflation
Many postings labelled CFO are controller or VP Finance mandates, and title inflation is a large hidden driver of the spread. A sub-$25M business posting a "CFO" role may be hiring a controller, which is priced on a different scale. Our controller salary guide for Toronto shows what that seat pays, and our piece on the fractional CFO role covers the part-time alternative.
How Does CFO Pay Differ at Public Versus Private Companies?
Public company CFOs are paid in a structure that is disclosed, and private company CFOs are paid in one that is not. Listed issuers carry mandatory disclosure, audit committee exposure and securities-law liability, and their pay is weighted toward share-based and option-based awards plus pension value. Form 51-102F6 (OSC unofficial consolidation) prescribes that disclosure for named executive officers, including a summary compensation table and tables on incentive plan awards and pension benefits.
Private company CFOs trade that for cash weighting and, when backed by private equity, for equity points. The public numbers can be read directly, which leads to the next section.
Where Can Employers Verify CFO Pay for Free?
Employers can verify CFO pay for free in three steps, using Canadian primary sources.
- Pull the Job Bank wage report for senior managers in financial, communications and other business services. Job Bank shows, for Canada, an hourly low of C$51.28, a median of C$96.15 and a high of C$153.85. The source is the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey, and the wages were updated November 19, 2025.
- Download the full wage dataset from the Open Government Portal, which holds Job Bank wages by occupation and economic region as CSV files for 2012 through 2025, for historical and regional wages not shown on Job Bank.
- Read the management information circular of three or four listed Canadian peers on SEDAR+ and take the CFO row of the summary compensation table, whose contents are prescribed by Form 51-102F6.
To convert the Job Bank hourly median to an annual figure, multiply by hours per week and 52 weeks. On a 40-hour week, C$96.15 an hour is about C$200,000 a year; on a 37.5-hour week it is about C$187,000 (our arithmetic). State the assumption openly, and remember that wages exclude bonus and equity.
Building a CFO Offer That Closes
A CFO offer closes when the number is built from a benchmark that matches the company, and the checklist below keeps it there.
- Benchmark against the company's own revenue band and ownership structure.
- Quote total compensation rather than base.
- Define the bonus mechanics before the offer stage.
- Decide the equity position early if the company is private-equity-backed or listed.
- Pressure-test the number against two independent sources.
BJRC Recruiting supports this process through finance and accounting recruitment in Toronto and Montreal.
